When parents first contact Amazing K, one of the most common concerns they share is that their child is not talking, is difficult to understand, or is struggling to communicate their wants and needs.

 

While speech is often the goal families focus on, communication development begins long before a child is able to use spoken language effectively.

 

At Amazing K, we focus on communication development rather than speech development alone. Speech can take months or even years to develop, but communication can begin immediately.

A child who learns to point, make choices, follow instructions, answer questions, use gestures, share attention, or communicate through visual supports is already building the foundations for meaningful communication.

 

Our Communication Enhancement Programme is available to children enrolled in either our full-day Early Intervention Programme or our Afternoon Bridging Programme.

What Is The Communication Enhancement Programme?

The Communication Enhancement Programme supports children in developing practical, meaningful communication skills that can be used throughout the day.

 

Instead of focusing only on spoken words, the programme supports the full communication journey. This may include understanding instructions, making choices, pointing, using gestures, answering questions, engaging with others, using visual supports, or developing spoken language.

 

Every child communicates differently. Some children may begin with gestures, pictures or visual supports, while others may be working towards spoken language, conversation skills and classroom participation.

How Communication Is Developed At Amazing K

Communication opportunities are intentionally built into daily routines, structured learning activities, play experiences, group participation and social interaction.

 

Our educators and therapists continuously model language, encourage interaction and create opportunities for children to communicate throughout the day.

Children are encouraged to request preferred items, answer questions, follow instructions, participate in group activities, make choices, take turns and engage with both adults and peers.

 

Visual supports, sign language and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies may also be introduced when appropriate to help children communicate successfully while speech continues to develop.

 

Rather than focusing solely on what a child can say, we place equal importance on what a child understands. Receptive language skills, including following instructions, understanding routines, responding to questions and processing information, form an important part of communication development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to be speaking to join the Communication Enhancement Programme?

No. Many of the children who join Amazing K are not yet using spoken language or are using only a few words. Communication can be developed in many different ways, including gestures, visual supports, AAC systems, sign language and structured interaction. Our goal is to help every child communicate successfully at their current level.

Is the Communication Enhancement Programme a separate therapy service?

No. The Communication Enhancement Programme forms part of our integrated early intervention approach and is available to children enrolled in either our full-day programme or our Afternoon Bridging Programme.

Will this programme help my child develop speech?

Communication development and speech development are closely connected. While every child develops differently, we focus on building the foundational skills that support speech, including attention, understanding language, imitation, turn-taking, joint attention and meaningful communication.

What if my child uses AAC or visual supports?

AAC and visual communication supports are welcomed and encouraged when appropriate. These tools help children express themselves, participate in learning and communicate their wants, needs and ideas while spoken language continues to develop.
