Visual teaching strategies

SM Edelson, PH. D wrote and I quote:  “Learning styles” is a concept which attempts to describe the methods by which people gain information about their environment.  People can learn through seeing (visually), hearing (auditory), and/or through touching or manipulating an object (kinaesthetically or ‘hands-on’ learning).

Most people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) flourish in a more visual and ‘hands-on’ environment opposed to an auditory environment as many battle with the processing of spoken language.

Everything we see can be included in visual teaching strategies – meaning body movements, the environmental cues, pictures, and objects as well as written language.

At amazing K we use all these visuals (signs) to our disposal as well as well-known teaching methods such as TEACCH & PECS to help our children better understand tasks and to support their communication.

We also help our parents by supplying them with visual teaching resources to use at home.  The resources include toys, TEACCH activities, PECS Schedules, Social Stories and much more.
