19 Jun When a child chooses their environment
One of the most powerful lessons we have learned over the years is that children often tell us exactly what they need. The challenge is learning how to listen.
Several years ago, a young autistic girl visited Amazing K while her family was exploring different educational options. At the time, her parents were still deciding what the next step should be for their daughter.
She spent a day with us and then returned to her regular setting the following morning.
What happened next surprised everyone.
She refused to leave the car.
She refused to walk into the building.
She simply did not want to be there.
After receiving a distressed call from her family, we agreed to welcome her back to Amazing K for another day while they continued their decision-making process.
“Every shared experience creates an opportunity for learning.”
Ilse Kilian-Ross
The difference was immediate.
- She climbed out of the car happily.
- She walked into the building without hesitation.
- She joined her class.
- She participated.
- She smiled.
The adults were still making decisions. The child had already made hers.
Over the years, we have seen similar situations more than once. Children may not always have the words to explain how they feel, but their behaviour often tells a story.
This experience reinforced one of the core principles of the Amazing K Method.
- Children learn best when they feel safe.
- They participate more willingly when they feel understood.
- Sometimes the greatest progress begins when a child finds an environment where they truly belong.
Why the Right Environment Matters
